The vOICe for Windows's integrated e-mail support is meant for use in combination with a suitable The vOICe Mail icon screen reader, using Control F2 to mute, if necessary. The vOICe user-friendly mail option greatly simplifies sending a soundscape or image from your camera, by automatically creating an e-mail message with binary attachments for images and sounds. It is no longer necessary to use a separate mail program or browser to assemble a message and search for the files to add as attachments. All you have to supply is the e-mail address of the intended recipient!

The vOICe mail feature is activated by pressing Control M or by traversing the File menu. A screenshot of the mail dialog is given below

The vOICe Mail dialog

Pressing Control M first saves the current video frame as both an image file vOICe.bmp and a sound file vOICe.wav, and then opens the mail dialog. This dialog lets you enter or change the e-mail address of the recipient, and you can optionally provide a second e-mail address or a short note to describe the snapshot. By default, both the vOICe.bmp and vOICe.wav will be sent as binary attachments, but you can change this default selection through checkboxes in the dialog.

Apart from sending live images and soundscapes right from your camera, you can also send results from imported images, or from the graphing calculator, or output from the exercise modes. The vOICe mail feature may be applied in remote teaching to blind students to obtain unprecedented levels of access to graphical material. The vOICe not only provides full access to graphics, but through mail also lets you show graphics and corresponding soundscapes to other blind or sighted people on the web, be it fellow students, teachers or whoever you want to address. Of course it is up to you to decide what you want, because using and understanding soundscapes does involve a steep learning curve.

Remarks:

The e-mail address of the first recipient is preserved across sessions, which is convenient if you are repeatedly mailing snapshots to the same recipient. The other dialog settings are not preserved and will be back to their defaults the next time you enter the dialog.

It has been found that some mail programs upon receipt rename the attached files vOICe.bmp and vOICe.wav to 1_vOICe.bmp and 1_vOICe.wav, respectively. This is something to remember when you wonder where the mail attachments went.

The vOICe MAPI-based mail support requires the file MAPI32.dll in your system directory, and the corresponding menu option will therefore be greyed out in the File menu if this DLL file cannot be found or if its interface for some reason fails. Because many mail programs and browsers replace the MAPI32.dll upon their installation, problems could arise if the currently installed MAPI32.dll has been replaced with an incompatible version. So far no such problems have been reported, but it is good to be aware of the critical role of the MAPI32.dll file. You are requested to report any MAPI32.dll related problems that you encounter with The vOICe for Windows.
